“So, tell us… how’s that ’email writing’ thing going for you?”

I didn’t know how much I dreaded that question until I heard it.

It came from my step-uncle on that Christmas Zoom call.

Blood left my face in a rush…

I got that nervous heat on the back of my neck…

I chocked and stuttered something like:

“Yeah… am, it’s… it’s going well. Apparently, it’s a long learning curve, you know? Probably the first years are mostly about studying, so I still have a long way to go… but… I’m, I’m meeting a lot of cool people, building long-term relationships, and just being like a sponge. All in all, I’m glad I did it, I’m preparing as best as I can for when my time is right.”

Everyone else’s look at the dinner table was of what I would call “loving pity”…

I could almost hear them thinking “He’s got a wife and two kids! what in hell was he thinking about when he quit his job! He’ll come back around.”

But I knew I was unemployable by then…

and I knew I was going to make it on my own.

I was not gonna remain tamed in my job, with my “salary cap” (and it was a very good salary!, but still capped), and arm wrestling managers or colleagues for days off.

I quit my job with NO CLIENTS as a freelancer (wouldn’t recommend it btw)…

and a household of four to feed and protect.

So, basically I FORCED myself to make it work.

And, 12 months after that?…

I want people to ask me the same question…

because my answer looks more like this:

Glad you asked! It was honestly the best decision I’ve made in my life. I get to work from home, I write emails that are easy and fun to write, I’m fully booked, I make my clients a ton of money, and I’m making more money myself than ever. I have total control of my schedule, my days off…

It was a bit of a struggle at first, because I thought freelancing was mostly about _________. But once I ‘cracked the code’ on _________ and _________ _________, things started to roll, and it’s been a sweet ride. Couldn’t be happier!”

Now, let me stop for a second, and ask you…

Can you fill in those blanks?
